Larry W. Reaugh, President and Chief Executive Officer of American Manganese Inc. (“American Manganese” or “AMI” or the “Company”), (TSX.V: AMY; Pink Sheets: AMYZF; Frankfurt: 2AM), is pleased to announce that the Company has received a second progress report from Kemetco Research Inc. (Kemetco) on recycling lithium – cobalt cathode materials essential to the production of lithium-ion batteries.
In Phase 1 of the work program, Kemetco used the Company’s proprietary process to conduct several leach tests on lithium-cobalt cathode materials with a range of conditions. Kemetco was able to extract 100% of the lithium and cobalt from the cathode powders, which thus provided the necessary amount of filtrate for the next step of the process, metal precipitation tests.
In Phase 2 of the work program, initial single-pass sequential cobalt /lithium precipitation tests were performed, yielding cobalt recoveries of up to 91% and lithium recoveries of up to 60% respectively. However, Mr. Norman Chow, President of Kemetco, says that “With additional future lock cycle test work, lithium recovery should approach at least 90%.”
The purity of the cobalt and lithium precipitates exceeded 99% for each.
Mr. Reaugh says, “The results achieved to-date is about what we expected.” He goes on to say, “The focus of the final Phase 3 of the work program that is now underway is to recombine the cobalt and lithium precipitates to regenerate a lithium-cobalt cathode material suitable for confirmation testing in a coin-sized rechargeable battery.”
About Kemetco Research Inc.
Kemetco Research Inc. is a privately owned contract research and development company specializing in extractive metallurgy, chemical processing and specialty chemical analysis. It was formed after the acquisition of the industrial process division of B.C. Research, which had been in operation for over 60 years as a research and development contractor in British Columbia.
About American Manganese Inc.
American Manganese Inc. is a diversified specialty and critical metal company focused on capitalizing on its patented intellectual property through low cost production or recovery of electrolytic manganese products throughout the world, and recycling of spent electric vehicle lithium ion rechargeable batteries.
Interest in the Company’s patented process has adjusted the focus of American Manganese Inc. toward the examination of applying its patented technology for other purposes and materials. American Manganese Inc. aims to capitalize on its patented technology and proprietary know-how to become and industry leader in the recycling of spent electric vehicle lithium ion batteries having cathode chemistries such as: Lithium-Cobalt, Lithium-Cobalt-Nickel-Manganese, and Lithium-Manganese (Please see the Company’s March 31, 2016 press release for further details).
